What is Calendula?

Calendula officinalis is a multipurpose herb that is also known as Pot Marigold. It has flower petals that range from pale yellow to deep orange and contain soothing and emollient conditioners for many types of skin ailments. Calendula has long been used as a home remedy for diaper rash, minor cuts and burns, insect bites and stings, acne, athlete’s foot, and dry skin, and in some cases used internally to treat canker sores, sore throats, and toothaches. Historically, calendula was said to ward off evils spirits and help dream retention. Calendula petals are excellent for soothing inflammation and speeding wound healing because they are antibacterial, antiviral, and antispasmodic in nature. Calendula is potent, but still an extremely gentle herb, making it suitable for treatments for babies and adults alike.

Our Nature's Baby Soap is a soap made with calendula-infused oil. The olive oil used to make the soap is first infused with cups of calendula petals. The petals are removed and the infused oil is used to make the soap. The beneficial qualities of the petals can be felt in the soap lather.

To brew a calendula tea:

Use 3 teaspoons of fresh petals or 1 to 2 tsp dried in 8 ounces of boiling water. Steep for 5-10 minutes. This tea can be used as an acne facial rinse, gargle for sore throats, or used to treat minor wounds.
